If you are a UK agency founder moving your business to Dubai, you will discover that getting a UAE residence visa requires more than just your passport. One step that catches people out is the requirement to attest your UK degree. It is not optional for certain visa categories, and the process takes several weeks. Start it before you book your flight.
This guide covers exactly what documents you need, where to send them, and how long each stage takes. We work exclusively with agency founders, not immigration lawyers, but we have helped dozens of agency founders through this process. The practical detail here comes from real client experience.
Why Do You Need to Attest Your UK Degree for a UAE Visa?
The UAE government requires proof of your educational qualifications when you apply for a residence visa under certain categories. If you are applying for an employment visa, a freelance visa, or a golden visa based on professional qualifications, you will need to provide an attested degree certificate.
The attestation process verifies that your degree is genuine. It involves three separate authorities, each checking the previous stage's work. The UAE embassy in London, the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), and the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) all need to stamp your documents.
Without these stamps, your visa application will be rejected. You cannot bypass any of the three stages. Plan for the full process to take 4 to 8 weeks, depending on how quickly you move documents between authorities.
What Documents Do You Need to Attest Your UK Degree for a UAE Visa?
Before you start, gather the following documents. Missing one will send you back to the start of the queue.
- Original degree certificate, The physical document issued by your UK university. Not a copy, not a digital version. The original.
- Certified copy of your degree, Some authorities accept a copy certified by a solicitor or notary public. Check the specific requirements of the authority you are using.
- Academic transcript, Your university can issue this. It lists your modules and grades. Some attestation routes require it, some do not. Get it anyway.
- Passport copy, A clear colour copy of the photo page of your passport.
- UK visa or biometric residence permit, If you are not a British citizen but studied in the UK, you may need to provide evidence of your right to study there.
- Marriage certificate, If your name has changed since graduation (for example, after marriage), you will need to provide the certificate linking your current name to your degree.
- Cover letter, A short letter explaining what you are applying for and listing the documents enclosed. Most attestation services provide a template.
Do not assume you can skip the transcript. Some UAE visa categories require it, and you will waste weeks if you have to go back to your university for a reissue.
Step 1: Attest Your Degree with the UK Foreign Office (FCDO)
The first official stamp comes from the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO). This confirms that the signature on your degree certificate is genuine and belongs to an authorised person at your university.
You can send your documents to the FCDO directly, or you can use a third-party attestation service that handles the submission for you. Direct submission is cheaper but slower. Using a service costs more but saves time and reduces the risk of documents going missing.
The FCDO charges around £30 to £50 per document for standard processing. Turnaround is typically 10 to 15 working days. You can pay for a faster service, but the FCDO does not offer same-day or next-day attestation for degree certificates.
Send your original degree certificate, not a copy. The FCDO will not return a copy if they lose it. Use tracked delivery both ways.
What If You Lost Your Original Degree Certificate?
If you cannot find your original degree certificate, you need to request a replacement from your university. This is called a replacement certificate or a duplicate degree. It will look identical to the original but will be marked as a replacement.
Your university will charge a fee for this, typically between £30 and £60. Turnaround varies. Oxford and Cambridge can take 4 to 6 weeks. Some newer universities issue replacements within a week. Factor this into your timeline.
Step 2: Attest Your Degree with the UAE Embassy in London
Once the FCDO has stamped your degree, you send it to the UAE Embassy in London for the next stage. The embassy checks the FCDO stamp and then applies its own attestation.
The UAE Embassy in London is at 1 Waverley Street, London W1J 7RB. You can submit documents in person or by post. In-person submission is faster if you live in or near London. Postal submissions take 5 to 10 working days for processing, plus shipping time.
The embassy charges around £30 to £50 per document. You will need to include a prepaid return envelope if you are posting. Use a courier service with tracking, not Royal Mail standard delivery.
Some people skip this step and use a third-party service that handles both the FCDO and embassy stages. That is fine. Just make sure the service is reputable. There are scams in this industry. Use a service recommended by other agency founders or by your immigration consultant.
Step 3: Attest Your Degree with the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA)
The final stage happens in the UAE. Once your degree arrives in Dubai or Abu Dhabi, you send it to the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) for the last stamp. MoFA checks the embassy stamp and applies its own attestation.
If you are already in the UAE, you can submit your documents to MoFA in person. If you are still in the UK, your attestation service will handle this stage. Some services include MoFA attestation as part of their package. Others charge an extra fee.
MoFA attestation costs around AED 150 to AED 300 per document. Processing takes 2 to 5 working days. You can pay for a faster service at some MoFA centres.
Once MoFA has stamped your degree, the attestation process is complete. Your degree is now recognised by the UAE government, and you can use it for your residence visa application.
Step 4: Dataflow Verification (New Requirement)
Since 2023, the UAE has introduced an additional step for some visa categories called dataflow verification. This is a background check that confirms your degree and your employment history are genuine. It is separate from the attestation process.
Dataflow verification is handled by a company called Dataflow Group. You submit your degree certificate and your employment references to them. They contact your university and your former employers to verify the information.
This step is mandatory for healthcare professionals and teachers. For agency founders applying for a golden visa or a freelance visa, it is sometimes required and sometimes not. Check with your immigration consultant or the relevant UAE authority.
Dataflow verification takes 2 to 4 weeks. It costs around AED 500 to AED 1,000. Factor this into your timeline if it applies to your visa category.
